When I was a boy I dreamt about Superman´s kryptonite, whith these huge and transparent crystals. With the passing years I found it was a mineral fiction. But in December 1999, in Pulpí, in the Province of Almería (Spain), next to San Juan de los Terreros beach, was made an amazing discovery: giant crystals of gypsum more than half a meter size, with completely straight edges and limpids like ice. In the first term of 2000 and like members of the Granadian Mineralogical Group we were invited to visit this geode, before we had been inside the mine, but never in the geode, in that enormous cavity more than 10 mts. long. The vision was like in Science-Fiction, in the 2nd picture you can see a crystal 212 cm. long (2.25 yards) and in the third you can see the the removed dust by uncivilized people that pulled up one of these huge crystals. Relating this wild situation, members of the universities of Madrid, Almería and Granada and supported by collectors and lovers of the unrepeatable decided to make public the news and the american TV channel released it throughout Spain and probably the world for several days. Luckily its access is forbiden since then. It seems to be that the Almería University is studying its touristic viability, so in the end of 2008 some press article does mention the Andalusia Government support to the project, but don´t forget that gypsum is calcium sulfate and contains water in its structure, so humidity and temperature could alter them in a irreversible way with visits. So, they have thought to make a copy.
For a time appeared in the Guinness of the Records as the biggest geode in the world but in Naica, Mexico were discovered much bigger crystals of gypsum, like columns, in a danger of dissapearing mine.
You can search the Google site "Pulpí Geode" or " Giant Crystals Naica". There are photos, text and videos of both of these wonders. I hope you enjoy them.
